Welcome to the Metaverse, where our digital and physical lives converge. It will be the next evolution of the Internet, following up on the desktop and mobile eras.

The term Metaverse was first coined by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 novel “Snow Crash,” a blending of digital and physical existence. Almost 30 years later, that definition is taking shape before our eyes. The Metaverse will include a virtual world interoperating with a physical world; it will generate a robust economy that spans entertainment, education and work, while transforming long-standing industries and markets such as finance, retail, healthcare and fitness, and more.

Today, everyone is now staking their claim on the Metaverse, from social media giants Facebook and Snap to gaming powerhouses Tencent, Microsoft and Epic Games, to hardware providers Nvidia and TSMC. Big tech leaders are rushing to claim the Metaverse as their own. Facebook was recently renamed Meta, confirmation that the company’s future lies in the Metaverse. Microsoft is working on building the “Enterprise Metaverse.” Nvidia jumpstarted its “Metaverse for Engineers” with the opening of Nvidia Omniverse, which will connect “engineers, designers, and even autonomous machines to create digital twins and industrial metaverses.”
